Keeping walkways, steps, and driveways safe during winter is important, but repeatedly applying large amounts of de-icing salt can be hard on concrete.
Concrete absorbs moisture. De-icing products can increase the number of freeze-thaw cycles the surface experiences, while some salts may also contribute to scaling and surface deterioration over time.
Newer concrete and already damaged surfaces can be particularly vulnerable. Whenever possible, remove snow promptly before it becomes compacted or turns to ice.
Tip: Use de-icing products sparingly and follow the manufacturer's directions. For traction, homeowners can also consider options such as sand where appropriate. Inspect the concrete again in spring for scaling, cracks, or loose areas that may need attention.
